Supplementary course: Mechanics of Structures

Did a detailed study of transfer of loads and forces in structures.

Starting with understanding the basic elements like columns, beams, etc. And how it is the skeleton of any structure. Types of foundations, their load transfer techniques, etc.

The following image is the structural diagram of one of the rooms in my apartment. It shows how the load transfer in my room works through columns and beams.

It shows the main room plan in the center, the terrace above it, and the type of foundation beneath it. The arrows show the load transfer through the columns and beams in my building.

In this course, we were supposed to learn the positioning and functionality of skeleton structures. I learned that and also how the weight of a room is distributed through structural members. By looking at various structures and their built form I got a clear understanding of how load transfer works till the foundation in my room throughout the building.

Learned the significance of columns and beams and how they support the whole building. Mathematics behind it is understood and also how columns determine the depth of a beam.
